Bang!
GALLON DRUNK - The Rotten Mile LP
Originally released in the UK in 2007 on CD only, this awesome record is finally reissued now on vinyl with previously-unseen photography as well as liner notes by James Johnston.
Five years have passed since Gallon Drunk released Fire Music and during that time band leader James Johnston became a Bad Seed, touring with Nick Cave and appearing on the albums Abattoir Blues / The Lyre Of Orpheus and Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! Appropriate really given Gallon Drunk have the same fondness for hellish blues and baleful theatrics.
The Rotten Mile is a ferocious blast furnace of an album, propelled by squalls of gnarly saxophone, pumping bass and a voice which playfully skitters on the edge of hysterical collapse. Musically the album is rightly labelled punk blues or garage rock but both terms are far too simplistic. In fact lovers of those genres may find The Rotten Mile difficult to swallow.
