WYLDE RATTTZ - s/t LP (colour vinyl)
Limited edition colour vinyl.
Highly recommended.
Man, that's one hell of a lineup, ain't it? Let's look at it again: Stooges monster guitarist Ron Asheton paired with Mudhoney frontman Mark Arm, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley, ex-Minutemen/fIREHOSE bassist Mike Watt, Gumball's Don Fleming (who also produced), Sean Ono Lennon and, for kicks, Columbia Records A+R rep Jim Dunbar (the man who signed fIREHOSE and Gumball to Columbia, back when major labels were eagerly signing cool bands in the early 1990s).
It's a known fact that the majority of supergroups suck, they just do for whatever reason, but that's not the case here, this is totally great and the lineup sounds natural together. They're having a blast and do a fine job of translating that to tape and allowing the listener to join in on all of the fun.
Ever wondered why the Wylde Ratttz only had the one Stooges cover song that appeared on the 1998 Velvet Goldmine soundtrack and then just vanished, even though other songs began circulating in various forms online. Was this session just too cool and "unmarketable" for Columbia to put out or was some other issue going on since Mark Arm and the Sonic Youth guys were each under contract to different major labels at that time and some record exec wouldn't budge?
