CRIME AND THE CITY SOLUTION - The Killer LP
"Crime and the City Solution are one of the great underappreciated bands of our time. Forming in Sydney in 1997, they soon relocated to Melbourne where they became enmeshed with the city’s nascent music scene, sharing stages and influences with the likes of Nick Cave, Rowland S Howard and Mick Harvey. There is a definite argument to be made that singer Simon Bonney got there first in terms of sound and style and that Cave and co looked to him for influence.
The Killer is, without question, one of my albums of the year. It is little short of astonishing that Bonney and his latest band can still hit the heights of their previous work, which is a very high bar indeed. Where previous album American Twilight was aiming for garage rock, The Killer is aiming for our emotional core and is bang on target. It is an album that reflects our world from the viewpoint of an observer and chronicler who has seen more of it than most of us.
The Killer is further proof, if any were needed, that Crime and the City Solution may not be a household name, but they are capable of making music that is as good and better than any of their peers. It is an album that stands alone, needing no scene to be a part of, it is complete and perfect.
Crime and the City Solution stand at the top of the world, looking down at its sins and its shortcomings. Thank god we have them." - Louder Than War
