FIGURE STUDY - s/t LP
Includes insert with lyrics.
Figure Study is the Manhattan-based duo of NATHAN ANTOLIK and APRIL CHALPARA. They formed in 2009, after meeting through the Wierd Records weekly party, where they would play their first concert soon after.
While their debut 7" contained two songs recorded in 2009, this full length contains all new material. For their debut album, Figure Study utilizes a carefully tailored set up of vintage analog synthesizers and drum machines.
Figure Study creates a lush sound where haunting vocals echo over dark melodies that reflect an isolated and disintegrating world. Songs flux between dissonant dance numbers and more sparse, somber compositions, each carrying a sense of urgency and modernism.
Figure Study's sound includes influences from such early underground artists as Kirlian Camera, Nine Circles, and The Actor.
One would find it difficult to not compare Figure Study to classic gothic artists. If someone happened to strip away the electronic instrumentals found here on tracks like "Window," they would find work reminiscent of artists such as the aforementioned Bauhaus as well as The Sisters of Mercy. It is also obvious that dark sounding electronic acts such as Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance were heavy influences on Figure Study. One can even hear a slight touch of Joy Division in "Station." However, tracks like the absolutely stunning "Answers" proves that the duo can hold their own. They do take heavy influences from a number of iconic artists, yet they still manage to create their own unique sound and club-goth vibe.
