Temple of the Dog was a one album project conceived by Chris Cornell as a tribute for his ex-roommate and front-man of legendary Seattle bands Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone, Andrew Wood. Wood died at the beginning of 1990 by an OD before the debut full length album of Mother Love Bone was released.

Chris Cornell called his partner from Soundgarden, Matt Cameron, to join him, as well as most of the members of the new band of two former musicians of Mother Love Bone, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament. This band was Pearl Jam, and so Mike McCready and Eddie Vedder contributed to Temple of the Dog, before they released Ten.

The album is a set of mostly Chris Cornell compositions that seem to come out from jam sessions. The album featured a video clip of the song "Hunger Strike" which is the only studio recording that has a duet between Cornell and Vedder, two of the most recognized "grunge" voices. The record gained some popularity two years later because of Pearl Jam's success. Nevertheless, after its release, the members never rejoined to record material together.
