BARRY ADAMSON - Oedipus Schmoedipus LP (colour vinyl)
Limited edition white vinyl.
Highly recommended.
Barry Adamson creates dark goddamn music. Sure, his compatriot Nick Cave (who appears here on the great "The Sweetest Embrace" - Adamson served time in both The Bad Seeds and The Birthday Party) has his Murder Ballads, but there is something much more perverse to Adamson's work.
Oedipus Schmoedipus is a highly sexually motivated affair, or at least sex as a concept is close to its heart throughout, in any number of dark, dysfunctional ways. This comes right out at the start, with Jarvis Cocker in full ribald party mode looking for some action to 'save me from my own hand.' "It's Business As Usual" is a jagged, paranoid piece (built around samples from Bernard Herrmann's score for Vertigo) with a threatening phone message which immediately upon fading out, bursts into an absurdly upbeat Miles Davis tribute.
