While opinions on when seem to vary between fans and critics, there's a general consensus that Depeche Mode have fallen off just a bit compared to their heavily influential run in the 80's and 90's.
Suffice to say those expectations were definitely exceeded. While their old sound was never truly dropped, Momento seems to be a definite return to their dark and brooding synthetic sound that they're known for.
