Forever destined to live in the considerable shadow of its older brother Entertainment!, Solid Gold is nonetheless a fantastic record that predicts the 21st Century dance-punk craze with perfect clarity. Gill's viciously cool abuse of his guitar and the political lyrics get a lot of press, but anyone who's ever heard one of the band's first two albums start to finish knows that it's all about the rhythm section. When bassist Dave Allen and drummer Hugo Burnham lock into that perfect, funky-ass groove... you know it's time to get your self dancing. So, despite rants about the dehumanization of women and corporate greed, listeners can still somehow keep their booties shaking. Now that's a musical accomplishment.
