The Gris Gris's Greg Ashley has always shown potential as a supreme American songwriter, and he's for years shown his capabilities with a guitar and/or piano. On Another Generation of Slaves he continues the aforementioned, but along with it, he has adopted a keen sense of lyricism that is equally impressive and common. He's picked up the Leonard Cohen influence after doing a full-album cover of Death of a Ladies Man, and has picked it up to create his own thing, that gives contemporaries like Cass McCombs and Damien Jurado a run for their money. One of the more underrated albums of 2014, but it's for sure an instant classic.
