OWEN MAERCKS - Teenage Sex Therapist LP (colour vinyl)

8 years ago I walked into a Melbourne record store and asked if they had Owen Maercks ‘Teenage Sex Therapist’.
“No, and don’t know it. What’s it sound like?"
“It’s Pere Ubu meets Talking Heads or The Feelies, or Roxy Music with John Cale and throw in some Lou Reed and Beefheart."
“Sounds right up our alley!"
I ordered two copies from O/S and when Strangeworld opened a couple years later I thought, “Cool, I’ve got a spare Maercks LP for the racks!"

Selling that copy to a lawyer from SF, I found the direct supplier and ordered up big, eventually selling a copy to one of my oldest friends and Greville co-owner Bruce Milne. (he’ll tell you he’s my “mentor” and taught me everything I know…)

As Strangeworld was new(ish) and totally foreign to those on the South, he posted the following kind words:

“If you aren't a record geek, tune out now. I had never heard of Owen Maercks' album "Teenage Sex Therapist" until today (though it was recorded nearly 40 yrs ago). Richie, at Strangeworld Records (which I called Strangeways on my radio show - and he has never forgiven me), told me I needed it. And he was right. I hate to make such an obvious comparison but imagine if Eno wanted to rejoin Roxy Music but he wanted John Cale to be a part of it. This sounds like the demos they would have made. I'm not sure how limited this LP is but, if those names ring your bells, you may want to find it. Great sleeve notes by Byron Coley. My store, Greville, doesn't have copies (but we'll try, and probably fail). Strange World (sorry, Strangeways) does. I am sure it will be out of print soon. I've played it over and over tonight. End of geek rave.

He also said somewhere, “I wish my store carried records as cool as this."

Maercks himself even joined in, “Yeah, it’s not bad."

The owner of the store I’d originally gone to seeking a copy, then bum-rushed the post with “Also available at…” We’ve been mates for decades but boy - if I’d done that to him… WW3!!

Full of jaw-drop moves, this twisted-pop masterpiece is back, baby!
