40 years after their debut and 27 years after their last studio album, X release a new album, with several amazing things about Alphabetland. First the line-up is the same as on X’s debut “L.A”. Next, X display the same energy they had on “L.A” and thirdly and most importantly, “Alphabetland” is a bloody great record.
The title track opens the album and, at almost 3 minutes, is something of an epic. It may also be our favourite track on Alphabetland. X sound awesome and Exene is in fine voice. It is followed by “Free” which continues the onslaught, sung by John Doe & Exene and is a great punk/pop song, reminding you how good Zoom & Bonebrake are. “Water & Wine” is more traditional rock ‘n roll – sung by Exene and a great guitar solo from Billy Zoom, who also adds saxophone. Most of the tracks on the album are credited to Bonebrake, Cervenka, Doe & Zoom – as is “Strange Life”. It has a Stooges’ riff and is sung by John & Exene – and has a strong chorus.
